Origin and characteristics

Bean sprouts are the edible and tender shoots from the beans when they get germinated. Though quite a lot of beans can be made to sprout, the green grams are the most popular amongst the bean sprouts. These are used a lot in Asian kitchens, mainly in Chinese food and have originated from South Asia. The common Chinese dishes made out of these sprouts are soups and Spring rolls. They are a little crispy to eat and sweet in taste. The outer cover is green in color and the flesh inside is quite tender.

These can be sprouted or germinated at homes and it usually takes a few days for the shoots to emerge. The sprouts do not require a lot of space as they creep over and grow in the vines. These can be consumed in raw form or can be semi-cooked. But, remember that when you cook this highly nutritious sprout, you would be losing Vitamin C in that process. So, these should be either steamed or stir-fried or eaten in raw form. You could toss them in salads or fill them in sandwiches.

Season

These can be found throughout the year and do not have any particular season.
